Basic Impetvs - Ancients

Years ago I had a passion for Ancients and amassed many figures based and ready to go for the old Warhammer Ancients, which was a great system. However just as they were about to release some excellent new periods and armies the owners pulled the pin and I stopped gaming the period. Then I was introduced to Impetvs and than closely followed by Basic Impetvs. The rules certainly caught my attention and soon I was back in to wargaming one of my favourite periods after nothing for at least ten years. Now I am finding it quite hard to pick a different set of rules which can match this system. I am told that 'Into the Strongest' is also a great set but I have not as yet payed...but I do have the rules. Anyway the next few images are from two double sized games of Basic Impetvs Myself and the lads (Jeff Smith and Dave Lowe) played last Sunday afternoon.

Please enjoy

Regards

A real joy to see your games quite inspirational. As for rules we have worked through quite a few...currently for larger games we are using Kings of War historical with a few tweaks..it works well for larger games. To the strongest a little to grid based for me ?

Hi Matt

I have never looked at Kings of War but I might have to pick up a set next time I am in town.

All the best

Awesome looking armies. I am also a keen Basic Impetus player and lapsed Impetus player. Hoping to sort that.

Have tried Sword and Spear recently and enjoyed the mechanisms behind it. To the Strongest is on the playlist as is Hail Caesar.

All of that said I think it will Basic Impetus that I continue to play.

Cheers, Ross

some great looking armies.

Hey Ross

I think your right basic impetvs is very good and there are plenty of armies to choose from. Additionally you can always double or thriple your armies for big games, which I done a few times.

Super looking game!! Another way to play bigger games of Impetus and tailor them to your collections is to agree on the number of VBU's to be played say 50 for example using either the basic impetus lists or the period books from regular impetus. This also allows players to theme their armies. Of course best used for club gaming, but that's pretty much all I do so works for us. Like you started with WAB before moving on to Impetus after they stopped supporting it. Now, I just would never want to go back to single figure units again for mass battles. Played some other systems, but still prefer Basic Impetus/Regular Impetus over the others up to now.

Stunning collection of Ancients, Vinnie! Love the look of the pikes - I've never played Impetvs, but played WAB and recall when they "shut it down" so to speak. Since then I've gone with much more simplified rules - first a simplified version of Hail Caesar, and lately with Lion Rampant - currently the local favorite :)

Lovely figures and terrain! Impetvs is my club's rules set of choice for ancient gaming.

Thanks again for all the great comments everyone. Christopher I think your idea of VBU total is a great idea. We are wanting to start a little Successors campaign soon and I was stuck on what size the armies should but think you have nailed it. You are all quite right I don't think could go back to the single based figure armies either.

Thanks again

Inspirational as ever as for rules none of us are getting any younger so why constantly change if your happy with a set just keep playing it otherwise you will forever be in a tail spin then life will be over, unfortunately in this day of the glossy its a fact lost on most of us.

Rex you are absolutely right. I have only played two sets of ancients in my time the first was WAB and now Impetvs. There are some clubs I have been too who almost play a new set every month, which can be very frustrating.

Thanks for your comments

Great looking armies Vinnie! Rule sets are a tricky proposition, one person's preference, is another's poison. I used to play WAB, then Hail Caesar and now really like L'Art de la Guerre (ADLG)'as well as Dux Bellorum and Lion Rampant.
